I originally thought headers were pipes you put on your engine to make it flow the exhaust gages more efficiently. When I first got to work around cold headers, I thought, and still do, that the cold heading process was incredibly cool. It was also about this time that Mike McGuire and I crossed paths. That started a friendship that has lasted three and a half decades. As cool as the cold heading process is, my interest in thread rolling grew as I learned more about its efficient process of rolling precise screw threads on round work pieces. For all those who are connected in some way to threaded fasteners, I hope this description will add to your knowledge and under-Standing of this important fastener manufacturing process. First off, why is it called roll threading? It is because the work piece rolls between the threading dies as it is in process.
