摘要

Since ancient times, subsistence hunters in Africa have used snares to capture their prey. Snares, or nooses, are usually made of metal wire, nylon line or anything that is close to hand. These vicious traps are usually set along well-used animal trails. They are totally indiscriminate and can capture any animal unfortunate enough to stumble upon them. Snares can destroy any moving creature, from birds to elephants. A snare designed for an antelope is capable of trapping an elephant and condemning the animal to a slow and painful death through dehydration, starvation or infection from the wounds caused in its attempts to free itself. Today, Africa's wild animals are hunted more intensively than ever, supplying both local and international markets with what has become termed 'bush meat'. Kenya is home to the world famous Tsavo National Park but, even in a country that has more animal protection measures in place than most in the region, poaching is a real problem. Thousands of wire snares set everyday in Tsavo account for the suffering and death of many species of wild animals in a place designed to protect them.
