摘要

Willows are native trees bound up with the history and culture of the British Isles. The scientific name Salix is derived from Celtic, the earliest of British languages, sal meaning near and lis meaning water. Willows comprise a diverse and difficultto classify genus with a variety of common names such as withies, sallies, wullies, saugh and sauchan. Four native species can be regarded as timber trees. They are Salix fragilis/crack willow; S. viridis/ Bedford Willow; S. alba/ white willow and S. caprea/the sallow or goat willow. These and other species of willow, such as the true osiers, have long been used in cottage industries such as basket making, craftsmen taking advantage of rapid growth rates through the long established art of pollarding.Indeed willow played a significant part in two world wars being used to make horse-carried panniers for transporting munitions to the front in the Great War and parachute baskets in the 1939-45 conflict.
