Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a complex clinical syndrome that is characterized by an abrupt deterioration in kidney function among patients hospitalized for acute illnesses, especially in the intensive care unit due to severe metabolic, electrolyte, and fluid homeostasis disorders. The overall mortality of patients with AKI can reach 20-50% in developed and developing countries (44, 53). A substantial proportion of surviving patients may suffer from chronic kidney disease (CKD) during long-term followup (8, 39).
