The latest deal aimed at hastening the departure from office of Yemen's president, Ali Abdullah Saleh, appeared to be in jeopardy on Monday, although supporters of Yemen's long-entrenched leader continued to publicly support the plan (IOD Apr.26,p1). After weeks of diplomatic pressure from the six-member Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), Saleh did not travel to Riyadh to sign an agreement which would have seen him leave office within thirty days. A spokesperson for Saleh's General People's Congress said Monday that Saleh was still willing to sign the agreement but wanted to conduct the ceremony in the Yemeni capital of Sanaa. GCC head Abdul Latif al-Zayani was scheduled to return to Sanaa for more talks.
