Oil field services giant Schlumberger has struck an unusual deal in which it will ultimately acquire a 50% working interest in Forest Oil's assets in the booming Eagle Ford Shale oil and gas play in South Texas. Service companies like Schlumberger or Halliburton typically serve as contractors to exploration and production companies in return for a fee, rather than investing directly in upstream operations themselves.
