The term "subtle cavus foot" (SCF) has crept into common parlance in recent years, and is used to define a group of patients who have mild varus deformity of the heel and plantarflexed first ray. It has been the received wisdom that patients who have SCF are at higher risk of developing chronic ankle instability (CAI). Although now widely used, there have been precious few attempts to define SCF or the actual association with CAI.
