摘要

The UK breeding population of Turtle Doves Streptopelia turtur has declined by an estimated 98% since 1970. This trend is mirrored across Europe and the species is now categorised as Vulnerable by the lUCN.This paper describes a research programme totry to understand more about the decline. Two key observations from previous studies were that the number of clutches per pair per year had decreased since the mid-twentieth century while a shift in diet (with a much lower proportion of weed seeds) and foraging habitats indicated that food availability in rural habitats could no longer support multiple breeding attempts each year. Experimental plots and radio-tracking were used to identify a seed mix that could be used within agri-environment schemes tobenefit Turtle Doves. Where birds are feeding on concentrated food resources, trichomonosis may have increased mortality rates. Targeted habitat management to provide abundant natural food rather than supplementary feeding is likely to be the most effective way to help conserve what remains of the UK's breeding Turtle Doves.
