Astudy by scientists from Santa Clara University (Bacon et al. 2017, World Dev 93: 136-152) looked at how Nicaraguan coffee smallholders have coped with recent leaf rust outbreaks as well as drought and food insecurity.Their results identified several household characteristics and practices that were correlated significantly with fewer lean months, including production of more than half of the food consumed in a year, as well as farm size, off-farm employment, and coffee harvests. They found a strong inverse correlation between the number of fruit trees on the farm and the length of seasonal hunger - giving some useful support to the potential importance of agroforestry and agroecology for food security.
