摘要

As most of you will by now be aware, the International Union of Speleology (UIS) declared 2021 as the International Year of Caves and Karst (IYCK), in a major effort to help make the human race aware of how caves and karst are valuable in many different ways to all the Peoples of the World. Unfortunately, just as everywhere, COVID-19 has curtailed many of the planned events, including the UIS Congress, which was to have been held in France during July / August 2021 but has now been rescheduled for July 2022. In addition, the UIS has decided that the IYCK should extend over two years with 2021 as the "virtual" IYCK and 2022 as the "in-person" IYCK. COVID-19 restrictions made it impossible for the BCRA to arrange its usual Spring Field Meeting, but there is still some hope that a Summer Field Meeting might be possible. One of the few positive outcomes from the worldwide imposition of COVID-19 restrictions has been the widespread growth and burgeoning success of online meetings. For example, as just one part of the virtual IYCK, the BCRA has put together a programme of on-line seminars, which are currently taking place on the second Monday of each month. These seminars, which include ample time for "Questions and Answers", are designed to highlight different aspects of the cave and karst sciences and, to date, they have attracted audiences not just in Britain, but also internationally, including in Canada, the USA and New Zealand!
