Green electrokinetic remediation of Thiabendazole adsorbed soils via mineralization

Thiabendazole sorption and removal through mineralization by electrokinetic remediation technique was investigated in soils from five geographical zones of Pakistan. Sorption was accomplished by a standard batch equilibrium method followed by mineralization using electrokinetics. Soil sample 1 contained the highest organic matter (3%), consequentially exhibiting the highest distribution coefficient (K-d(ads) 15 mu g ml(-1)). Thiabendazole adsorption in all soils (K-d(ads)) ranged from 2.5 to 15 mu g ml(-1). Regression analysis between K-d(ads) and pH showed a negative correlation (r = -0.9, p = 0.03), while a positive one between K-d and organic matter (r = 0.9) was observed. ANOVA, BioStat and Minitab statistical analyses were performed to further understand sorption behavior. Electrokinetic remediation experiment utilizing carbon black electrodes obtained from drained battery cells turned out to be lucrative by efficiently mineralizing and removing Thiabendazole in few hours with negligible cost (83% maximum removal efficiency). This study can open future perspectives of investigations for optimization of electrokinetic remediation methods.
