Demand and prices for wood chips for energy production in Iberia are being depressed by the availability of cheaper agriculture residue chips (agri-chips). Purchases of agri-chips — produced from pruning fruit trees, such as orange and olive trees, and some agri-residues, such as vine shoots — are on the rise this summer, driven by low costs and high availability, according to Spanish agroforestry company Generandi. The growing use of the cheaper agri-chips has squeezed wood chip prices in Iberia — the price of wood chips in Spain reportedly fell by around 10pc from early J uly to €5.91/GJ this week.
