摘要

Central Australian Aboriginal people have been utilising the local plants as sources of food, medicine, tools and weapons for thousands of years. Certain fruits could be harvested and eaten fresh while others required various levels of preparation such as grinding or cooking. Typically, it was the women who gathered and prepared these types of foods. Secondary food sources, including lerps or grubs, could also be found on the leaves or in the root systems of the local flora. These provided much-needed protein or added a sweet treat to the diet. The following is a selection of the more commonly used food plants of the region, but is by no means definitive.
