摘要

Negative thoughts about posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) treatment are barriers to treatment. This mixed-methods study aims to better understand beliefs about PTSD treatment and their relationship to treatment engagement. Thirty-six primary care veterans with probable PTSD reported treatment-related thoughts during a single-session cognitive behavioral therapy for treatment seeking (CBT-TS) intervention to address maladaptive treatment-related beliefs. A deductive content analysis based on the theory of planned behavior (Ajzen, 1991) and CBT concepts characterized treatment-related thoughts; exploratory quantitative statistics evaluated the relationship with subsequent treatment utilization. Behavioral beliefs about the treatment process was the most prevalent content domain. Individuals reporting automatic thoughts about treatment outcomes/process attended fewer psychotherapy sessions than individuals who did not report thoughts in that content domain. These findings increase our knowledge about cognitive barriers to treatment faced by individuals with PTSD and can inform additional research and outreach efforts to improve treatment engagement.
