Radon has long been recognized by the WHO to be the 2nd leading cause of lung cancer after smoking. Even lower amounts of radon present in everyday living areas were categorized as an important cause of lung cancer. In an effort to reduce radon risksin the country, the South Korean government took strategic actions to deal with this issue; first by identifying high radon areas in the country correlating actual indoor levels with local soil and housing, second by adapting the legislation especially about preparatory actions, and finally by implementing all the measures decided. The purpose of this paper is to describe the real situation of the indoor radon gas in Korea and present governmental actions.
