摘要

As US forces reach the halfway point of their planned withdrawal from Afghanistan, currently scheduled to wrap up by the end of July, there are growing signs that Afghan security forces in the country's remoter regions which no longer benefit from US military support are collapsing in the face of an emboldened Taliban. In the nine weeks since the Biden administration announced it was pulling US forces out of Afghanistan, the Taliban has seized control of more than 40 districts, with another 180 in imminent danger of falling. The Taliban has published a series of propaganda videos showing Afghan soldiers surrendering their arms and equipment in exchange for a $60 payment and free passage home. Many observers had anticipated the consolidation of Taliban control over rural Afghanistan. But with major cities such as Kunduz and Mazar-i-Sharif in danger of falling to the group in the coming days, the potential for a collapse of the Afghan security forces like that experienced by the South Vietnamese military in early 1975, on the eve of the fall of Saigon to the North Vietnamese, is all too real.
