摘要

Kestrel is an underground mine located in the Bowen Basin of Queensland, Australia, that produces standard hard coking coal and a small amount of thermal coal for the export market. Owned by Rio Tinto, Kestrel's south extension had a high capital cost of US$2bn, but will extend the mine life by 20 years. The mine is 367km from the Port of Gladstone and, therefore, has higher transportation costs compared to other mines in the basin. Kestrel can also rail coal to Dalrymple Bay, which is an advantage if there are problems on the Gladstone rail line or at the port. With an estimated FOB cost of US$82/t, AME expects Kestrel to be cash margin positive in 2018 and, if costs continue to be controlled, to remain economically viable going forward. In March 2018, Rio Tinto entered an agreement to sell its 80% stake in Kestrel to a consortium including EMR Capital and Adaro Energy for US$2.25bn. The sale completed in August 2018.
