Silurian to Middle Devonian members of Proetinae with in particular taxa that are morphologically similar to Gerastos are reviewed. Gerastos is widely distributed in Lower and Middle Devonian strata in the Rhenohercynian Basin (southern Laurussia), peri-Gondwana and northern Gondwana. Evolution of the group during the late Lower to Middle Devonian is consistent with a mosaic pattern and this has probably in part been to blame for the lack of consensus about its structure and relationships to morphologically similar genera. The distribution of Dohmiella, a former synonym of Gerastos, is mostly confined to the Eifelian of southern Laurussia with at least one species occurring in the Emsian of peri-Gondwana. Morphological trends in the Eifelian indicate a conservative morphology with mild convergences on other proetine genera such as Gerastos. Dohmiella and Gerastos form a Siluro-Devonian Glade with Podoliproetus, Kegeliella, Orbitoproetus (including Helmutia), Myoproetus and Rhenocynproetus, should all those genera be retained. Longiproetus is once more restricted to its type species. Coniproetus (synonyms: Tropiconiproetus and Ryckholtia) is in need of revision because its present concept is polyphyletic. Bohemiproetus is taken as a group of vaulted Pragian proetines with affinities to Coniproetus but its type species should be revisited. Newly described taxa are: Gerastos cornix sp. nov., Dohmiella pooka sp. nov. (both from the Eifelian of Belgium) and Dohmiella pachyacanthophilia sp. nov. (Emsian of Spain).
