On 4 July 2019 southern California was rattled by the largest earthquake to occur in the region in nearly 20?yr, a moment magnitude (?MW?) 6.4 earthquake that occurred near Ridgecrest approximately 200?km north of Los Angeles. It was followed on 6 July by a larger MW?7.1 earthquake. The distribution of aftershocks made it clear from the beginning that this was a complex earthquake sequence involving rupture on multiple faults. Unraveling the secrets of the sequence, consisting of over 100,000 events, will undoubtedly require years of research. Fortunately, researchers will be enabled...
