(Photo by Louis Tedders, USDA ARS)A cold winter day in a leafless pecan orchard rarely conjures images of insects and all the damage they can do to pecans. But with the days flying by and spring almost here, the insects will be back. At least it seems that way, even though most never left. The majority of the pecan pests we contend with each season are with us all year, even in the dead of winter. Many of these pests never leave the tree and for those that do, they remain in the vicinity of the tree, whether in the soil or in nearby woods. A simple search using scouting methods that work well during the summer will generally fail when applied to finding the overwintering insects. With no leaves or nuts to sample, where are they now?
