The roles of auxeticity and volume fraction on gamma ' precipitate microstructures in nickel-base alloys

New correlations are found between the elastic constants and late-stage precipitate microstructures in Ni-Al, Ni-Ga, Ni-Ge and Ni-Si alloys. The auxetic behaviour of Poisson's ratio, v, measured parallel to [001] or [1 (1) over bar0] in response to [110] loading, favours the amalgamation of Ni3Al and Ni3Ga precipitates into non-equilibrium shapes along cube directions when delta v = (v(v') - v(v'))/v(v')> 0, the superscripts referring to the gamma' (Ni3X) and. (Ni-X) phases, respectively. When delta v < 0 amalgamation of Ni3Ge and Ni3Si precipitates does not occur and the particles retain cuboidal shapes. When delta v > 0 amalgamation of Ni3Al and Ni3Ge occurs readily, primarily producing laths of both phases. The gamma' volume fraction, f, is also shown to play a role in the late-stage microstructures of Ni-Al alloys, with an increasing tendency to form Ni3Al laths, rather than plates, as f increases. The shapes of elastically soft. precipitates in inverse Ni-Al and Ni-Ge alloys are different; Ni-Al precipitates are lath shaped, but Ni-Ge precipitates are plate shaped. The Ni-Ge plate shape, in a non-auxetic Ni3Ge matrix (Ni3Ge being the sole non-auxetic Ni3X phase of the four studied), is the only example of persistent plates in any of the Ni-base alloys investigated to date. The combination of an elastically soft precipitate (Ni-Ge) in a non-auxetic matrix suggests a connection between auxeticity and shape.
