Disruptions, delays, bad weather and the global escalation of the COVID-19 pandemic all weighed on iron ore production in the first quarter. Consequently, production by the top 20* reporting iron ore producers contracted by 10%, or 37.7 million mt, quarter over quarter. The year-ago comparison shows iron ore production down by a more sedate 3.1%, or 10.6 million mt. First-quarter highlights include Rio Tinto and BHP toppling Vale as the world's biggest iron ore producer. Vale's first-quarter production slumped by 24% from the December 2019 quarter and was 18% lower year over year. Supply was hardest hit at the Southeastern system, with output dropping 31%, or 8.2 million mt, quarter over quarter. Operations have been hampered by delays in ramping up shuttered capacity at the Timbopeba and Fábrica mines, and hold-ups on implementing alternatives for the removal of tailings at the Brucutu plant.
