Each quarter S&P Global Platts speaks at length to a dozen Chinese mills about their steel margins, raw materials burden mix, and outlook for the next quarter. Chinese steel mill margins have been fairly healthy over January-April, averaging $84.2/mt for rebar and $52.5/mt for hotrolled coil. But they were around half the level of last year's peaks. (Rebar reached a peak of $173/mt last August while HRC was at $140/mt at that time). The average rebar margin in April increased to $107/mt, up 51.7% on month, according to S&P Global Platts analysis (see chart 1).
