Asia-Pacific spot metallurgical coal pricing remained relatively stable in the middle of August with market participants in no hurry to restock as demand remained weak in the China and ex-China markets. S&P Global Platts assessed Premium Low-Vol HCC down 25 cents on week to $183.75/mt FOB Australia on August 17, while delivered prices to China also were down 25 cents on the previous week to $188.50/mt CFR China. Premium hard coking coal averaged $184.97/mt FOB Australia in July, down from $198.53/mt the month before, and the lowest monthly average since October last year. An impasse remained in China between buyers and sellers, as end-users were in no urgency to restock inventories. This was especially evident in northern China, where most steel mills were still subjected to production cuts due to environmental checks.
