Flat steel prices have been soaring and are expected to continue rising into April, while downstream demand for rebar is still recovering but is likely to improve as warmer weather aids construction activity. ?? Steel inventories have been falling quickly in recent weeks and could be helped by softer production in Hebei due to the output cuts for environmental reasons. ?? New steel orders look robust and domestic market conditions are healthy. Exports orders have stalled due to the mooted removal of export tax rebates. If the rebate is removed or lowered, Chinese export offer prices will rise to levels that overseas buyers may not be willing to pay. ?? Steel production started the year strongly, rising almost 13% on year in January-February but may be lower in April due to production cuts. However, if output levels do indeed fall, this will be from a very high base. ?? The Trend Tracker is a view of key market measures in the month ahead based on internal and external opinions.
