摘要

Despite a name suggestive of a health-promoting plant, gentian violet is in fact a carcinogenic, synthetic industrial product, which is ingested by infants when applied as a solution to the nipples or used to treat oral thrush. Mucosal ulceration and sometimes serious allergies have been reported in breastfed newborns exposed to this substance. Depending on the era and context, the term "gentian violet" refers to one or more substances produced industrially from aniline extracted from coal tar, and used as colouring agents, especially in the textile and cosmetic industries. Its antibacterial, antipara-sitic and antifungal properties have also led to its use in factory farming and veterinary medicine.These various applications have been either authorised or prohibited, depending on the country and the era (1,2).
