Statins and fusidic acid: rhabdomyolysis

About 200 cases of rhabdomyolysis reported worldwide between 1991 and 2016 after combination of a statin with fusidic acid. The Bordeaux Regional Pharmacovigilance Centre (France) analysed 198 reports of rhabdomyolysis, involving a drug interaction between a statin and systemically administered fusidic acid, recorded between 1991 and 2016 in the World Health Organization (WHO) pharmacovigilance database (1). These case reports in patients aged 68 years on average involved atorvastatin (95 cases), simvastatin (81 cases), and more rarely rosuvastatin, pravasta-tin or fluvastatin. The statin was co-administered with fusidic acid for a median duration of 31 days before the onset of rhabdomyolysis (1). Elevated creatine phosphokinase, muscle weakness and acute kidney injury were reported. Thirty-eight patients died(1).
