In patients with metastatic or inoperable non-small cell lung cancer, whose tumour cells harbour the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutation del 19, the EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors afatinib or osimertinib are first-line options. If the tumour cells have an EGFR mutation other than del19, the first-line treatments are an EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor or platinum-containing chemotherapy, with the choice depending in large part upon their adverse effect profiles (1,2). Dacomitinib (Vizimpro0, Pfizer) is another EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor. It has been authorised in the European Union for use in patients with metastatic or inoperable non-small cell lung cancer whose tumour cells harbour an "activating" mutation of the EGFR gene (2).
