In June 2019, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning concerning the risks posed by vinpoce- tine in women who could be pregnant (1). Vinpocetine is synthetic substance derived from vincamine, an alkaloid extracted from the lesser periwinkle (2,3). It is sold with the status of a dietary supplement. It is promoted as improving cognitive performance (memory, attention, perception, etc.), boosting energy and rapidly reducing body fat, but its benefits have not been demonstrated (1,4). In animal studies, vinpocetine caused embryo loss, decreased fetal weight and congenital malformations such as cardiac ventricular septal defects, supernumerary ribs and ossification disorders. The blood levels of vinpocetine in the pregnant females were of a similar order to those observed in humans with a 10 mg dose of vinpocetine (1,5).
