60 million boxes of antidepressants, dispensed to around 5 million people, were reimbursed by France's national health insurance system in 2014 (1). Since the 1990s, patients diagnosed with depression by their doctor have more and more often been prescribed drugs, aimed at reducing the duration of the depressive episode and preventing relapses or progression to a chronic condition (2). The success of these drugs can be explained in part by history. Calming versus aggressive therapies Since ancient times, writings have described the existence of disorders which today we call depression. Two states have often been distinguished, under names which have changed over the centuries: on the one hand, a reaction to an event, which fades with time, and on the other hand, persisting symptoms, with no explicable cause, which was called melancholia in the 19th century (3,4). The psychological, biological, social and genetic causes of these disorders are still debated today within the scientific community.
