In August 2020, the French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety (ANSES) reported ocular adverse effects that occurred in young children who had sprayed their eyes with alcohol-based gel while using a dispenser provided in a public place during the covid-19 pandemic (1). 63 cases of splashes resulting in eye injury were reported to French Poison Control Centres between 11 May and 24 August 2O2O.The children were aged 4 years on average. Most of the cases occurred in a shop or shopping centre, with other cases occurring in restaurants, swimming pools, public parks and theatres. In 20% of the children, the ocular injuries led to an emergency department visit, and in two cases, there was reversible corneal damage (1).
