It is observed from statistical process monitoring literature that self-starting control chart methods are useful in monitoring the process when only a small amount of relevant historical data is available. These self-starting charts help in estimating the process parameter (average and standard deviation) for Phase I, since collecting baseline data can be difficult or slow in some applications. In this article, it is proposed to use the average of the in-control average run length (AARL) and the standard deviation of the in-control average run length (SDARL) to assess the in-control run length performance of self-starting charts conditioned on the preliminary data used. Originally, the procedure for implementing the self-starting Shewhart and CUSUM control charts for individual observations is discussed. The performance of the proposed conditional in-control self-starting Shewhart and CSUM charts using the AARL and SDARL metrics is assessed using a simulation study and then the results are discussed in detail. Based on the discussion on the results obtained some practical implications of the proposed methods are given and recommendations regarding the use of self-starting charts are made.
