Just where are we heading with the whole IPM approach for edibles and ornamentals under protection? The EU Sustainable Use Directive on pesticides (2009/128/EC) says "implementation of the principles of IPM is obligatory" and "priority given to non-chemical methods of plant protection". Under the Sustainable Use Directive (SUD) the use of IPM techniques became law under EU rules from January 2014. Brexit is unlikely to lead to any major change as Defra Secretary of State, Michael Gove MP continues to pursue a strongly environmentalist policy, Joanna Wood reports.
