Bigger plants and more flowers in the same pot size, to please the retailer. Plants that look better value at the time of purchase, and give longer-lasting pleasure in the consumer's home. All this at very small extra cost to the grower.These are the prospects held out by the results of two cultural trials conducted last year on their own premises by the leading Dutch cyclamen breeders Varinova and Schoneveld Breeding, reports John Sutton. From both trials samples of plants at the ready-for-sale stage were sent to the FloraHolland test facility FlorEsearch for a further, six-week long, assessment of flower life and plant condition. This was in simulated environments, the first phase, transport, lasting five days in darkness, then threedays in retail conditions, and finally five weeks in the conditions of a typical consumer's home. A major aim of the Varinova trial was to assess the effectof applying the bio-growth stimulant Fytaforce, a concentrated mixture of naturally occurring soil microorganisms. A product of the Dutch company Soiltech, Fytaforce is specially formulated to enhance the root environment, stimulating root growth and activity. There were six experimental treatments altogether, all applied to plants of the mini-flowered variety Picola Shine Red, sown in week no 17 and grown in a Meegaa compost in 10.5cm pots.
