摘要

European settlement of Australia began with the arrival of ships from England in the 1780s, and within a few years a series of colonies began to develop around the coastal areas. In 1901 these colonies joined together as states to form the Commonwealth of Australia. As major cities grew within each of the colonies, natural history museums were established and began to accumulate mineral collec?tions, often by absorbing the private collections of individuals and earlier institutions. Australia even today has no centralized "national" mineral collection, so instead a system of State-run museums exists in the capital cities. The earliest of these is the Australian Museum, established in New South Wales in 1829.
