Palaeogeography of the Rhenish Slate Mountain region during the Early Devonian

A series of mainly sedimentological studies from the last 100 years have been re-examined and integrated with new fieldwork, in order to redefine the palaeogeography of the Rhenish Slate Mountain region during the Early Devonian. Existing interpretations were classified using a clastic coast model and interpolated to create palaeodepositional maps. These maps show the evolution of the Rheno-Hercynian Basin from the Lower Pragian through to the Upper Emsian. During the Pragian and the Early Emsian, deposition in the Rheno-Hercynian Basin was mainly influenced by the development of the Siegenian Delta, a major fluvial-dominated depositional environment, as well as by the varying subsidence rates in the different sub-basins. With the end of rifting in the basin, the depositional setting changed dramatically from one characterised by relatively shallow shelf conditions, with related deeper sub-basins, to an archipelago-like shallow marine environment.
