Background Parallels have been drawn between the 'Great Depression' of the 1930s and the more recent 'Great Recession' that followed the 2007/8 financial crisis. Austerity was the common policy response by UK governments in both time periods. This article examines health inequalities at a local level in the 1930s, through a historical case study.
