摘要

Death can be a confusing and overwhelming concept for young children, especially those who experience the loss of a parental figure. Research has shown that young children are able to comprehend the concept of death but often times there can be confusion around the finality of death, how to express their emotions, and how to cope with the strong feelings they are feeling. The purpose of this dissertation was to create a story book as a resource, specifically designed for young children three to five years old, who have experienced a parental figure death. The children's book was created based on a literature review and designed to allow any adult, professional, teacher, adult friend, or parent to use with young children who have experienced parental figure death. The primary audience is a parental figure and child. The reader goes on a journey with the main character Maggie who demonstrates to the reader different ways to reach out for support when feeling confused, angry, and sad about the death. Different animals throughout the story support Maggie in understanding the concept of death, learn mindfulness coping skills, and learn about expressing and understanding emotions from different techniques noted in the literature review. The children's book was reviewed by fifteen professionals who consisted of mental health professions, health professions, preschool teachers, and kindergarten teachers. Participants rated the book on nine 6-point Thurston scale items and six open ended questions. Overall responses from the qualitative and quantitative data suggested that the book met its initial goal and could be a support source to young children dealing with death of a parental figure and providing them with age-appropriate coping skills. Participants agreed that the book was age appropriate for young children and included interesting and engaging illustrations and content. Some participants provided constructive feedback on how to better adjust the book to meet the need of young children. This feedback will be considered when revisions of the children's book is done. The book is included in the dissertation.
