摘要

COVID-19 has thrown community, nation and world into a collective state of grief and mourning. We search for answers as to how this crisis unfolded and question why so many lives were lost. Many of my veteran patients have experienced intrusive memories of buddies they lost in the war during this pandemic. One patient's story stays with me. During a surprise daytime ambush in Vietnam, my patient's buddy and friend was shot right next to my patient. The last words he heard his buddy say were "Oh God." Every time his buddy yelled out in pain, he was shot more, until holes went right through his body, "like swiss cheese." My patient passed out as a bullet pierced through his helmet and split it open like a mushroom, but he emerged intact. A religious man, he felt the miraculous medal rosary he carried in his breast pocket at all times in the war, protected him. He endured survivor guilt after this traumatic incident, and wondered "Where was my friend's miracle?"
