This handbook of bibliotherapy from Poland is a valuable, comprehensive survey of the current state of poetry therapy/bibliotherapy in central and Eastern Europe. It is scholarly as well as practical, offering a unique perspective on the international foundations and therapeutic applications of our field. In Poland and in much of Eastern Europe, bibliotherapy finds its home with social work as a specialization within the department of education. Bibliotherapy in Poland is also associated with the fields of special education, literature, and library science, but not directly linked with psychology or psychiatry. In reference to library science, American practitioners will fondly remember the pioneering work in biblio/poetry therapy by librarian Sister Arleen McCarty Hynes, OSB, and Mary Hynes Berry, Biblio/Poetry Therapy, The Interactive Process: A Handbook (1994) updated and revised by Joy Sawyer (Hynes et al., 2011). Sister Arleen's groundbreaking work and teaching program took place in a library setting at Saint Elizabeths Hospital, Washington, DC.
