The new compound {[Cu(phen)]_(2)[Cu(phen)_(2)]_(2)Nb_(6)O_(19)}·24H_(2)O (I ) (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) was prepared under ambient conditions. The crystal structure is composed of the [Nb_(6)O_(19)]~(6–) anion which is expanded by two different Cu~(2+) centered complexes via Cu–O bonds to form a charge neutral compound. One polyhedron around Cu~(2+) is a slightly distorted square pyramid, while the second polyhedron is between square pyramidal and trigonal bipyramidal. The distortion of the polyhedra is reflected in the EPR spectrum. The molecules are arranged in a layer-like fashion with the crystal water molecules forming a cluster being located between the layers. The crystal water molecules can thermally be removed, and water sorption experiments show a steplike water uptake, leading to full recovering of the crystal structure. The steplike behavior is explained by the differing strengths of hydrogen bonding interactions. A room temperature in situ X-ray diffraction experiment demonstrates that the pristine material loses water, forming first an intermediate compound and finally a water-deficient crystalline sample. Luminescence measurements demonstrate a weak red glow.
