Prices for carbon steel plate in the United States were steady over the past week, breaking a streak of eight consecutive weekly gains after mills were content to collect spot orders at existing levels and then gauge demand in preparation for their next move. “Plate is sort of at a standstill right now,” one service center source said. “Everybody has their February number and they are working through what they have.” Fastmarkets’ weekly price assessment for steel cut-to-length plate carbon grade, fob mill US was unchanged $47 per hundredweight ($940 per short ton) on Friday January 15 but still up by 88% from 2020 low of $25 per cwt reached in August.
