Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia is now the chairman of the Energy and Natural Resources Committee — and is already exercising his influence to defend the fossil fuel industry. In recent public appearances, Manchin has been vocally resistant to policies he sees as harmful to US energy security or jobs in traditional energy sectors. In a letter published on Friday, for example, Manchin urged President Joe Biden to consider the benefits of “responsible” natural gas production when making decisions concerning federal oil and gas leasing and permitting. Biden’s Interior Department has frozen new leasing in federal areas while it reviews whether the program serves the public interest (OD Jan.27’21).
