Carbon nanotubes (CN) have attracted increasing scientific and industrial attention due to their unique mechanical and electronic properties. No wonder, there is hardly any month that passes without publishing a CN-related article in Nature and Science. This tendency well indicates the innovative potential of CNs in materials science and nanotechnology even though some of their future potential applications that laboratory scientists envisage seem to be highly speculative. Herewith citing the deterring example of fullerenes does not need justification. When buckyballs were first discovered, there was also much excitement about practical applications. It was a widespread idea that they would make e. g. great lubricants. Some of these proposals did not display sufficient economic potential though. Others, such as trials for using these carbon nanostructures as drug delivery vehicles did not result in fully controllable experiments. Furthermore, plans of utilizing fullerenes for superconductors, although showing scientific and economic potential, are costly and could not be commercialized. Presently, commercial applications of fullerenes are still to be discovered, in spite of the research conducted by giant companies such as IBM, Xerox, and DuPont.
