Turkmenistan is about to break Russia's grip on its gas exports, but the chances of gas eventually flowing west from the central Asian state remain slim. Two new export routes for Turkmen gas are due on stream this month - one to China through Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, the other to northeast Iran. Turkmenistan is due Baku to export 44bn m3 next year, with 36bn m3 flowing along these new routes. And exports to China and Iran are scheduled to rise to 60bn m3/yr by 2013. The new lines should help Turkmenistan break free from its dependence on exports to Russia, which took over 42bn m3 last year. Russia stopped buying Turkmen gas in April after demand collapsed and Turkmenistan refused to accept lower prices. It is still unclear when deliveries to Russia will resume.
