Artificial enzymes are synthetic, organic molecules prepared to simulate the active sites of enzymes. Enzyme catalysis of chemical reactions occurs with high selectivity and rate in a small part of the enzyme macromolecule, called to active site. There the binding of a substrate close to functional groups in the enzyme causes catalysis by so-called proximity effects. It is therefore possible to create similar catalysts from small molecules mimicking the enzyme active sites by combination an appropriate small molecule having ability to bind substrate with catalytic functional groups. Since the artificial enzymes need to bind molecules they can be constructed based on host-molecules such as a cyclodextrin, crown ether, or calixarene, etc. A number of artificial enzymes have been reported catalyzing various reactions with rate increases up to 10~3, substantially lower than that natural enzymes typically cause (above 10~6).
