Greenland's burning ambitions to become one of the world's premier oil and natural gas producers have been put on ice for the time being. In 2008 the US Geological Survey ranked the East Greenland region fourth out of 25 oil and gas provinces in the Arctic in terms of hydrocarbon potential. Despite the considerable resource potential, a saturated market together with the recent plunge in oil prices have led multinational energy companies to significantly cut down their activities in the region. A recent assessment has suggested there are 17 billion barrels of oil equivalent (boe) yet to be discovered in the West Greenland-East Canada basin, 31 billion boe in East Greenland and 3.3 billion boe in Northern Greenland.
