As the cost of dynamic positioning hardware has fallen it has become almost a standard feature on many vessel types. Consequently demand for dynamic positioning operators (DPOs) has grown dramatically in recent years, outgrowing its original oil and gas territory, and become a skillset necessary for a far broader swath of the shipping industry. Shuttle tankers: More offshore oilfields are exporting oil in tankers, rather than via pipeline. In many areas the offshore loading terminal may be in an exposed location that precludes mooring. It is these areas that need DP-capable tankers.
