I applaud the editorial freedom of the Marine Professional and the opportunity it provides for strongly held views. There is much in your editorial of the October 2015 issue with which I agree. It is, however, unfortunate that some of the left wing commentariat and many politicians base their visceral opposition to the future of the UK nuclear weapons on naive emotion rather than reality. The anti-nuclear weapons lobby appears to lack an understanding of deterrence theory and the multi-faceted threat to the UK and world peace posed by the many nations and cultures, who do not share our common values. They also, seemingly, ignore the role of military power in both hard and soft geopolitical diplomacy and the importance of our role on the Security Council and relationships with NATO & US. The value of the defence industry to our economic wellbeing is frequently misrepresented. The past 100 years have shown repeatedly how wishful thinking and unpreparedness have resulted in horrors of war. By abandoning the nuclear option we may well be in danger of making the same mistakes. The Royal Navy (RN)has a clear role in contributing hugely to any government's prime responsibility of 'Defence of the Realm'.
