Rumours abounded at the end of Novemberthatthe Ballast Water Convention had finally garnered enough flag-state support to come in to force. While the majority of the industry is jaded enough to ignore this chatter until an official announcement from the IMO, the possibility still lights a fire in the eyes of Jurrien Baretta, business development manager at Goltens Green Technologies, which assists with retrofits of environmentally friendly technologies at its six global centres. "I've been waiting forthe convention to be ratified for a long time," she says. Goltens' environmental solutions division has been active since 2011 -and was in fact her brainchild and the reason that she was hired. "I was working at another company where I introduced laser scanning for ballast water retrofits. Until then it was used in the offshore sector but unknown in shipbuilding or repair. Goltens saw the potential of this market and asked me to join them to build their green department."
